چکیده

A general framework for parameterized proof complexity was introduced by Dantchev, Martin, and Szeider [2007]. There the authors show important results on tree-like Parameterized Resolution—a parameterized version of classical Resolution—and their gap complexity theorem implies lower bounds for that system. The main result of the present paper significantly improves upon this by showing optimal lower bounds for a parameterized version of bounded-depth Frege. More precisely, we prove that the pigeonhole principle requires proofs of size nΩ(k) in parameterized bounded-depth Frege, and, as a special case, in dag-like Parameterized Resolution. This answers an open question posed in [Dantchev et al. 2007]. In the opposite direction, we interpret a well-known technique for FPT algorithms as a DPLL procedure for Parameterized Resolution. Its generalization leads to a proof search algorithm for Parameterized Resolution that in particular shows that tree-like Parameterized Resolution allows short refutations of all parameterized contradictions given as bounded-width CNFs.

Parameterized Complexity of DPLL Search Procedure

Zusammenfassung: We study the performance of DPLL algorithms on parameterized problems. In particular, we investigate how difficult it is to decide whether small solutions exist for satisfiability and other combinatorial problems. For this purpose we develop a Prover-Delayer game which models the running time of DPLL procedures and we establish an information-theoretic method to obtain lower bo...

A Exponential Lower Bounds for AC-Frege Imply Superpolynomial Frege Lower Bounds

We give a general transformation which turns polynomial-size Frege proofs to subexponential-size AC0Frege proofs. This indicates that proving truly exponential lower bounds for AC0-Frege is hard, since it is a longstanding open problem to prove super-polynomial lower bounds for Frege. Our construction is optimal for proofs of formulas of unbounded depth. As a consequence of our main result, we ...

Matrix identities and the pigeonhole principle

We show that short bounded-depth Frege proofs of matrix identities, such as PQ = I ⊃ QP = I (over the field of two elements), imply short bounded-depth Frege proofs of the pigeonhole principle. Since the latter principle is known to require exponential-size bounded-depth Frege proofs, it follows that the propositional version of the matrix principle also requires bounded-depth Frege proofs of e...

Theories for Subexponential - size Bounded - depth

This paper is a contribution to our understanding of the relationship between uniform and nonuniform proof complexity. The latter studies the lengths of proofs in various propositional proof systems such as Frege and bounded-depth Frege systems, and the former studies the strength of the corresponding logical theories such as VNC1 and V0 in [7]. A superpolynomial lower bound on the length of pr...
